March 18 – Hands Only CPR

You will learn the basic CPR algorithm and practice with an emphasis on high quality compressions and early EMS deployment.

We will also discuss the AED and incorporate its use into our CPR practice.

This education is not meant as a substitute for a Heart and Stroke certified CPR course. It is just the basic Hands Only CPR algorithm and is designed to get people more comfortable with doing the highest quality compressions possible.

April 8th – MOST form conversation and introduction. (Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment)

The MOST form is a document which is used by health authorities across the province to help doctors and emergency personnel respect patients’ wishes, should those patients not be able to speak for themselves.

If you are elderly or living with a chronic disease, or know someone who is, this session will inform you about your emergency care options and provide you with the information you need to make changes to those options.

We will discuss the form and how to get it filled out properly, review all the MOST options and discuss the effectiveness of certain medical interventions.

April 29th – Blood Pressure and Heart Health education

Your Denman and Hornby Island Community Paramedics will be providing a free blood pressure clinic and education session relating to heart health.

We will discuss the risks of having High Blood Pressure, common modifiable and non-modifiable factors, as well as what you can do to take better care of your heart and blood vessels.

If you have High Blood Pressure or any kind of heart disease, this session will help you understand how to better manage these conditions.

Your Denman and Hornby Island Community Paramedics will be providing a stroke recognition and action plan education session.

Come and learn about strokes and TIAs (TIAs is a temporary period of symptoms similar to those of a stroke), who is at risk, what the signs and symptoms are and what actions to take if you think that you, or someone you know, may be having a stroke. We will cover the specifics of the FAST stroke assessment tool, different kinds of strokes, treatment options and various other related material.

Join us for this education session and learn how to reduce your risks of suffering a life altering cerebrovascular event.

The Hornby and Denman Community Healthcare Society and the Comox Valley Child Development Association are thrilled to be partnering to offer this group for the first time on Denman Island this fall, facilitated by staff from the CVCDA.

“At times, all parents will feel lost or even without a clue about what their child might need from them. The Circle of Security Parenting (TM) program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened. This series will assist parents in making sense of what their child is really asking from them with learning objectives such as reading your child’s emotional needs, supporting emotional management and enhancing the development of your child’s self esteem.”
