AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

(Homeschoolers welcome!)

Stories
Grades 3+. Our community is full of interesting people with fascinating stories to tell. During this program kids will learn simple interview techniques and then get the opportunity to hear from a variety of guest speakers. Intergenerational conversations can encourage curiosity and confidence in kids and have a positive impact on all participants!

Youth Squad
Grades 6 & 7. Youth Squad is returning! This is a well-loved and established weekly program that gathers Grade 6 and 7 students to build connections, supportive relationships and leadership through fun and creative activities that promote mental and physical wellness. We create a safe and comfortable space to just be oneself, through funny games and improv, weird crafts and art projects, strange science experiments, active mindful and playful movement, and always good snacks and tea.

Community Health Care Society
Date: Tuesdays, January 10 – February 28
Time: 2:30-4:00pm
Cost: $20/semester

Kids Club Gym Time
All ages. Free gym time after school, to run, play, jump, roll, whatever. Kids have access to all our gym equipment including: a giant parachute, gymnastic mats, scooters and sports equipment.

Date: Tuesdays, January 10 – March 21
Time: 2:30-3:30pm
Cost: $20/semester

Creative Creations
All ages. Together we will take care of the school garden and harvest food for the school’s lunch program. In bad weather we will be indoors for crafts and cooking.

Date: Wednesdays, January 11 – March 22
Time: 2:30-3:30pm
Cost: $20/semester

Evening Soccer
This indoor soccer program for family and friends is open to ages 8+ years. Each day will feature warm up activities followed by an hour of soccer with music! The roof is going to be blown off the gym with all the laughter, good times and amazing play!

Date: Thursdays, January 12 – March 23
Time: 5:00-6:30pm
Cost: $20/semester

Role Playing Games
Grades 5-7. Dungeons and Dragons, and the many other role playing games it has inspired, is a group story-telling activity where players come together to create fantastical characters and stories. Combining improv, imagination, and team-building with simple arithmetic, role-playing games help develop problem-solving and interpersonal skills in a safe, structured, and fun environment.

Maker Space
All ages. Basically, we listen to music, make stuff, and talk (and sometimes sing). Kids have free time in the craft room
with access to all the Maker’s Space crafting materials. Individual creations come alive during this time, and kids often
collaborate on group projects too.

All our after-school programs take place at Denman Island Community School and require pre-registration.

YOUTH

Teen Night
Grades 7 and up. Teen Night is a drop-in opportunity for youth to meet-up and hang-out in a relaxed environment.
Facilitators: Sam Borthwick and Michelle Gould
Outreach Workers: Sara Schouten
Dates: Every Friday
Time 7:00-10:00pm
Location: CAP Site
Cost: $2 drop-in

EARLY YEARS

Parents’ & Tots’ Morning Out
Join us in a fun-filled morning with games in the gym, stories, crafts and snacks. This is a great way for the children to socialize, to be introduced to the community school and for parents to meet other parents. This is a drop-in, parent/caretaker participation activity – all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Date: Fridays, January 12 – March 24
Time: 9:30am -12pm

Cost: No Charge
Room: Gym

To Register: Email dices.communityprograms@gmail.com with the name and age of your child/children and the programs
they would like to attend. While we cannot guarantee space, please indicate if you have a strong preference for any of the programs you are signing up for.

We will be confirming enrolment by Friday January 6.

Parent Volunteers
We strive for a 1:8 maximum ratio of adults to kids for our after-school programs. With the help of volunteers, we are able to open these programs to more children. Please indicate in your email whether we may place you on a regular parent-volunteer or on-call list.*

Payments
Payments can be made via e-transfer to dices.director@gmail.com, or with cash when you pick up your child on the first day of programs.
Bursaries
Bursaries are available for all of our programs, please reach out to dices.communityprograms@gmail.com if
you require financial support.

DICES STAFF
Sadie Gibbs and Jessica Schlegel are our Co-ED’s. Miki Fox is our Program Coordinator. Programming
support is provided by Taina Uitto, Sam Borthwick, Michelle Gould, and Veronique Eriksson.

WHO IS DICES?
Denman Island Community Education Society (DICES) is a non for profit organization that in partnership with SD71 offers a variety of programs and services they help meet the specific educational, recreational and social needs of Denman Island.
We offer programs for kids, youth, families and adults throughout the year including summer camps, and after-school programs and make the school space accessible to the community.
During the school year we support the school through the school lunch program, the school garden and other special projects.
We run the Food Bank and other food security programs and services as well as a computer access site.
